Hand of Faith
Imagine walking one day and you have a metal detector in hand and come across a 72 troy "pound" gold nugget, one foot under the ground?
Well that's exactly what Kevin Hillier did in Australia in 1980. The nugget was later sold to the Gold Nugget Casino in Las Vegas.
The massive nugget found in Australia is called: "The Hand of Faith "
It is the largest gold nugget ever found by a metal detector to date.
See the nugget here:
Supposedly the nugget was sold for 1,000,000 $
When I was younger I had a metal detector and loved to use it. I hear that you can even make a living by metal detecting on popular beaches. I guess the things they find are lost rings and watches.
I would just love to get a new metal detector and do a little bit of research and find old forgotten mining towns and give it a try.
The information on old mining towns has surely got to be in libraries or online somewhere.
I used to hear or read about how mines would close years ago because the amount of gold being mined just wasn't enough to be viable.
Today, however with gold prices over a thousand dollars I can't help but wonder if there a couple of three ounces out there. A little bit of gold dust under a pile of dirt or around the old mine or mining town.
