The best advice is to consult a doctor for any kind of medical advice concerning skin conditions. However, I wanted to share a personal experience or rather share a personal experience and a family member's experience with acne. But first let's take a look at what acne is.

Acne is a chronic skin disorder caused by inflammation of sebaceous glands and hair follicles. Sebaceous glands are super small glands in our skin that secrete an oily substance called sebum.

It's Normal

This is a natural thing and is believed to protect your skin by supplying your outer skin with nutrients and by creating a barrier of sorts. There are many sebaceous glands on an individuals face, making it a very common place for acne to appear. Your shoulders, neck and back also have a high concentration of sebaceous glands, which makes these areas prone to acne outbreaks.

If you notice, acne is very common for those that are reaching puberty. There seems to be some evidence that genetics can play a role, where acne can tend to run in families, but for the most part it is most common during puberty. The reason for this, they believe, is because during puberty there is an increase in hormones, particularly androgen hormones, which they think links to an increase of sebum from the sebaceous glands.

A common form of acne is called acne vulgaris which is the common kind of acne associated with teenagers. Some believe that there are external factors that can exacerbate or make acne outbreaks worse. Factors like high humidity, places where you may work that use cooking oils or exposure to oils in general, may aggravate an acne condition. Other factors may be makeup or cosmetics, which also might make the acne worse.

What is happening is your body is producing higher levels of sebum and it is potentially clogging your pours, making your skin more conducive for acne or creating a more favorable condition for bacteria to grow, which causes the inflammation. This is what creates the inflammation which creates acne or pimples. This blockage creates the commonly known pimples, blackheads and whiteheads and even cysts.

Nothing To Be Ashamed Of

More than likely it has nothing to do with eating too many sweets, although a good healthy diet will more than likely help. Quite simply, it is just part of growing up in most cases and it will eventually run its course. But I know that will not help a teenager who is very conscious of their appearance.

Experience: How To Get Rid Of Acne

A close family member of mine had a very bad case of acne. He was going through puberty and was about seventeen years old. He washed his face regularly, he didn't eat a lot of sweets and was very healthy. Once he started getting acne he tried many of the over the counter acne treatments. Of course he became very sensitive about his appearance which probably created stress that more than likely didn't help the situation. Many of the over the counter acne treatments and cures contained benzoyl peroxide and would dry out his face. Some of the other treatments were very obvious and I suspect they were noticed by people making him even more self conscious. Despite this, nothing really worked. He had pretty severe acne, especially his forehead which was covered with red bumps.

After he had tried most of all the regular acne treatments he sort of just gave up. But what he started doing next, made the most improvement. He simply would take a cotton ball each morning and use diluted hydrogen peroxide that you can buy rather cheaply and used it to lightly clean his face, making sure not to get any in his eyes or mouth. It seemed like a very short amount of time, days weeks or a month and the acne just seemed to go away on its own. Afterward, he didn't have any acne or acne scars. He did not pick or scrub, or anything that could damage his face, he just simply cleaned it with a cotton swab with some hydrogen peroxide on it.

Experience: How To Get Rid Of Blackheads

Blackheads can be very noticeable and harder to get rid of, especially around your nose area. Sometimes just keeping your face clean or using over the counter acne treatments or medications just won't get rid of them. There are some ways to remove them effectively, however. Without naming a brand I would suggest a deep cleaning pore strip. These pore strips are a sort of tape or more descriptively what amounts to a small "papier mache" strip that you apply a small strip of to the area with blackheads and then you wet it and then let it dry out. After a few minutes you carefully pull the strip of tape or paper off and it will pull the blackheads out. I know, it sounds gross but it can work. It sounds low tech and too simple to work, but in my opinion it is worth the money.

Keep in mind that all skin conditions and advice about skin conditions should be consulted by or discussed with a doctor and I am only sharing my personal experiences and is not intended to replace the advice of a dermatologist or a doctor!
